Renaissance Brandon, as the downtown development corporation has become known, has been granted authority from the City of Brandon to conduct activities related to downtown business development such as the ownership of property, establishment of incentive programs and retention of proceeds from investments. Furthermore, the organization is to create unique partnerships between the public and private sectors that bring revitalization and new energy to downtown Brandon.

The Renaissance District was defined as 6th Street westward to 13th Street & Pacific Avenue southward to Lorne Avenue as an area containing a cornucopia of buildings from newly built and renovated to those nearing the point of no return. In 2010, the Renaissance District was rebranded the Downtown HUB. In 2012, City Council adopted a secondary land use plan that has boundaries from 1st Street to 18th Street at Rosser and Pacific Avenues and approximately 5th Street and 13th Streets on Princess Avenue and between 9th Street and 10th Street on Lorne, Louise and Victoria Avenues.

Currently, the Downtown HUB marketing boundaries are significantly smaller than the secondary land use plan boundaries and are identified by the HUB street signs located in the core of downtown Brandon. As the continued transformation and revitalization of our downtown continues the HUB boundaries will continue to expand throughout the secondary land use plan boundaries.

The Downtown HUB is the heart of the city and includes a mix of market and affordable housing, speciality retail, professional services, commerce and light industrial. The City of Brandon in support of the organization provides annual funding, which pays for operational costs, including our grant programs. The Board of Directors is comprised of six (6) citizens-at-large directors who are appointed by City Council. The Rosser Ward Counciller (Councillor Kris Desjarlais) also sits on the Board of Directors and Mayor Rick Chrest serves as an ex-officio Member. Steve brings strong urban development and community planning expertise to the board. His urban planning background, enhanced by 6 years’ experience working with the City of Brandon’s Planning Department, provides great insight into land use plans, zoning and the planning permitting process in Brandon. Steve has been employed for the past two years with VBJ Developments; a private land development company in Brandon specializing in residential land development. Steve has knowledge from both the public and private sector which he brings to the Renaissance Brandon Board in order to help make sound development decisions for downtown Brandon. Steve is a strong proponent of revitalizing the HUB district.

In 2008, Michael and his business partner, Daniel Burns, established Burns Maendel Consulting Engineers Ltd., a growing design firm located in downtown Brandon. Michael is Chair of the Brandon Downtown Biz Association (BDBA) where he is actively involved as a business owner in the promotion of the downtown area through the BDBA. Michael is also the Vice-Chair for the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of the Province of Manitoba (APEGM), Westman Chapter.
