Redevelopment Program Supports Two Dancing Projects

August 6, 2010

August 5th, 2010 – Renaissance Brandon is pleased to announce its support of two downtown dance studios through two, separate Redevelopment Program grants, totaling $65,000. These two projects will bring over 600 families to our district each week and stimulate over $350,000 in improvements to two buildings within the Renaissance District.

“These two projects take us a step closer to developing an arts and entertainment hub in our downtown core”, states Vince Barletta, Chairman of Renaissance Brandon. “Successful places exist because people frequent them and bringing over 600 people downtown each week, especially after 5 p.m. will significantly improve “Life After Dark”.”

132, 9th Street will be the new, permanent home of Steppin’ Time Dance Studio. Steppin’ Time is re-locating downtown after 15 years in business. Steppin’ Time is Brandon’s largest dance studio. Their new home will be a completely renovated building consisting of 4 full dance studios, 2 waiting areas, change room, drinking fountains, and full climate control with dual air exchangers.

“After 15 years of being in business purchasing property downtown is a dream come true. As you can imagine, I am incredibly excited to have this happen for Steppin’ Time, and I can’t wait to continue classes in our new facility this September,” explains Monique Roy-Keller, owner of Steppin’ Time Dance Studio.

The second project supported by Renaissance Brandon is the newly acquired Brandon School of Dance. The Brandon School of Dance was operated for over 30 years under the direction of Barbara Ehnes and is now under the new ownership of Brent Campbell who has recently purchased the business. Mr. Campbell, along with the principal and artistic head of the school, Mrs. Kelly Lumbard, will now manage the administration and operation of the business.

The Brandon School of Dance will be moving to the upper floor of 126, 10th Street in early September, 2010. Renovations to the space will include the development of four dance studios, a props/costume room, male/female change rooms, a waiting area for parents and office space.

“Our intent is to carry forward our reputation of excellence in our new downtown space”, explains Brent Campbell, owner of Brandon School of Dance.

Cruisin’ The Dub

July 13, 2010

You breathe high-octane…sleep custom cars…and eat piston fueled power.

Well this will pop your clutch! Cruisin’ the dub roars into downtown Brandon July 30th and September 2nd from 6 ’til 9, on Rosser avenue between 6th and 13th Street. On display will be cool customized cars, rebuilt rides and supped-up vehicles. Share your pride and joy with other car enthusiast-truck, motorcycles, classic cars, all are welcomed. Brought to you by Brandon and Area Car Enthusiasts, A&W and the Bank of Montreal.

Renaissance Brandon is proud to support the entertainment component of this highly attended downtown event through its Arts and Cultural Grant Program. For the second straight year a grant has been awarded to the Road Rebel organization, who organizes and operates Cruisin’ The Dub. The grant money will pay for the bands and sound equipment.

The Downtown Cruise Night has been a part of Brandon now for several years. Now known as “Cruisin’ The Dub”, it has continued to grow over the past few years. By the end of 2006 over 200 vehicles were counted to be in attendance and the number of spectators each month was estimated to be over a thousand!

In 2007 the participants and the spectator population grew even higher! The largest turnout ever to be seen at a downtown cruise night, in the history of Brandon, took place on Friday, August 3rd. As this was the weekend of Super Run, over 600 vehicles squeezed into Brandon’s downtown streets, and there was no chance of even counting the thousands of spectators there that night. Super Run will be back in Brandon in 2010, with even more cars to see, and even more spectators walking the streets of downtown Brandon checking them out.

Effect and Cause – July 7th

Call it what you want, but it’s “give it all you’ve got” southern rock from
the north. The band recently dropped their self-titled EP to follow up last
year’s release entitled “Gavroche”. The new EP was recorded and produced in
three days at Unison Studios in Winnipeg, Manitoba with Jack Shapira
(Quinzy, The Nods, Inward Eye). “The new Effect and Cause album shows the
group’s growth since its last studio work. These guys have a very bright
future ahead of them.” – Joanne Villeneuve, Brandon Sun. The vast dynamics,
direct lyrics, and thrash guitar solos on the 7 track disc speak of the time
spent writing and practicing during the harsh Manitoba winters of their
adolescence. The band is comprised of four distinctive musicians who come
together to produce a fervent holler of sound. Lead vocalist and bassist
Katlin Mathison has a distinct rock voice – rasping, melancholic, yet also
powerful and raw. His creative, honest, and observant lyrics are set to
equally honest music. Drummer Cody Iwasiuk has torn the seams of standard
rock blueprints and stitched it back up again with his unique rhythms and
inventive beats. Guitarists Lewis Parker and Darren Hebner complete the
package, showing off their technical dexterity with ardent parts and
innovative solos. They’ve played in various venues across Western Manitoba,
winning contests, jamming music festivals and packing the bars on any night
of the week. Highlights for the band include playing at X-fest, Countryfest,
headlining Ridgefest, Rockin’ the Fields of Minnedosa, playing in front of
thousands at the Forks in Winnipeg on Canada Day, and playing a showcase at
the Western Canadian Music Awards. With their youth, exposure, distinct
sound and energetic live shows, Effect and Cause are sure to be around for
some time yet.

Misty Street – July 14th

Misty Street

Misty Street has made a name for themselves in Brandon as being the band
everyone loves. The two front musicians of the band Misty Mariah and Greg
Gibson sing a well rounded mix of original music, pop, classic rock and even
some blues. These two songbirds recorded their first album recently with
the help of a Factor grant. They call themselves Misty Street the duo or
Misty Street the band. Whether it’s the duo or the 5 piece band you will be
entertained from start to finish! So come take a Sweet Ride on Misty Street.

July 21st – Larry Roulette and John Thompson

Larry has been playing music for as long as he can remember, having first picked up a guitar at age 4. As he plays a wide variety of music, it is difficult to categorize his style, but he mixes humour with music and is able to present each song in a unique, personal manner. Larry has played with and has personal contact with various well-known musicians.

John is a guitarist originally from the Ottawa Valley, and was touring across Canada with his band when he met his future wife and fell in love with this part of the country. John has played with some very major acts, both in Canada and the USA, and currently plays with the band North of the Border.

Larry and John have known each other for about thirty years and enjoy getting together to play music. They play a wide variety of musical styles and can be quite interesting to see and hear, as they have to ability to connect with their audience.

July 28th – Sebastian Owl

Sebastian Owl as a band was the birth child of pianist and vocalist Blair Atkinson, and bassist and vocalist Ian Russell. They met by chance and discovered a mutual affection for all things music. Pretty soon they began writing songs to a concept and brought in friend, vocalist and drummer Trevor Crook into the mix to add to the vocal layers. Once Crook saw the potential in the songs he brought in friend, vocalist and guitarist Dave Comrie. And after a while, a comfortable nit of vocalist/ songwriters was formed in pursuit of an eclectic sound. It’s not just about the music for them and it’s also not only about the lyrics. This band strives to be a cohesive catharsis of one single emotion for each song they play.

Sebastian Owl draws influences from all facets. Collectively they share a love for the music of Sufjan Stevens, Fleet Foxes and Mumford and Sons. Individually they range from Brian Jonestown Massacre to Blind Melon. St. Vincent to Regina Spektor. Each member enjoys the full range of what music is and what music has to offer. What inspires them to play is that sheer euphoria when they write a song and play it well. The over-whelming joy a tight harmony can bring and the over-all satisfaction of doing what they love, music.

August 4th – Tom Dowden

Tom is back! Tom Dowden first performed on June 23rd to rave reviews. Yes he’s a little bit folky, a little bit rocky, a little bit popy, a little bit jazzy, funky and bluesy and a whole lot entertaining. Joining Tom for a few songs is Randy MacDonald. Randy started singing at an early age and has sung classical, rock and jazz and was part of the Edmonton music scene for many years. Bring the whole family and enjoy the music with Tom Dowden.

August 11th – Trail Mix

Based out of Knox United Church in Brandon, Knox Combo is a six piece band including Harold Kuipers; vocals & keyboard, Karen Forsythe; vocals, Jim Lewthwaite; drums& vocals, Al Gunson; guitar, Joe Ball; guitar and Bernie Whetter; bass. The musical style of Combo reflects the eclectic musical, personal and professional backgrounds of its members. We play a wide range of music from easy listening folk, rock and country to various styles of contemporary sacred songs. Combo, provided music leadership for the 2008 United Church Conference weekend, and occasionally under the alias of Trail Mix has performed at a variety of fundraising and community building events and at numerous occasions in Brandon, including Relay for Life, Christmas at the Green Spot and Stories Alive, a local street festival supporting literacy.

August 18th – The Jimmy Sweets

If you have not made it down to Wednesday’s By The Fountain yet this year. This is your last chance! The final event of this year’s concert series is the 18th.

The Jimmy Sweets have been singing and hamming it up together as a family for nearly forty years, and now they’ve gone public! The Jimmy Sweets’ line-up at Princess Park will include Jimmy, aka Jim McCrae, a Brandon city councillor and Realtor; Sweet Boomer, aka Tara Taylor, an employee of the Brandon RHA and mother of two boys; Sweet Bugs, aka Candice Brown, a teacher and mother of an active one-year-old.

Jimmy says there are in fact five Sweets, all of them his daughters. “Sometimes other responsibilities come between us and our fans, but our fans are always in our hearts.” Sweet Bonkers (Toby McCrae), Sweet Bones (Nancy Yon) and Sweet Balls (Hollie Wells) are also members of the group and perform when they’re available.

“We really look forward to some fun on the 18th,” said Jimmy.

Son Latino Band

SON LATINO BAND:

Son Latino Band was born in the summer of 2008. Latino Immigrants in Brandon, MB started working with jazz university music students in a big band format to perform Latin Jazz and traditional Latin rhythms such as Salsa, Merengue, Cumbia, Mambo, Bolero Latin Rock and Jazz. This band is the result of the fast social and cultural changes that immigration has brought to the province. The band had an immediate success with its first performance at The North 40, an important live music venue in Brandon, Manitoba. Latin American immigrants and locals recognized the band as the most amazing mix of talents in the city. In 2009 Son Latino band debuted in the local Brandon Folk Music and Arts Festival. The reaction of people was
unforgettable, making everyone move away their camping chairs and dance.

Son Latino Band also performed at the 2009 Folklorama in Winnipeg as part of the Colombian Pavilion with great success. In 2010 Son Latino will be working on its first studio recording, with a selection of the best of its repertory.

Despite the difficulties of working with 21 people on rehearsal and on stage, the Son Latino Band is today one of the most important music groups of Manitoba.

The powerful sound of Son Latino Band created by 9 horn players, 4 percussionists, 4 singers and dancers, 1 keyboard player, 2 guitars players and 1 base player will make everyone move, sing and dance Son Latino’s
songs. The high quality improvisation of our wind players, the sounds of experimental Latin American percussionists and the leading of a truly Latin keyboardist make this band unique in Manitoba. Very well known in the city of Brandon, Son Latino Band is slowly conquering hearts everywhere they
perform. The cultural diversity of Son Latino’s band members reflects in their music, a mixed repertory of famous Latin Standards as well as original music. The songs in Spanish and English talk about a variety of topics such as immigration, love, everyday life in Manitoba and many other.

Salsa Ya! Dance Group.

Salsa Ya! Is a group of experimented dancers whose mission is to show the tradition of Latin-American popular couple dancing. Dancing is an everyday matter in Latin-America and the sizziling performances of Sala Ya! show the public the their way of life. Merengue, Salsa, Cumbia are some of the dances naturally performed by Salsa Ya!

The group started on 2010 and has danced at communitarian Latin community
events in Brandon at community centers. For the first Brandon Multicultural
Summer Festival, Salsa Ya will perform an experimental educative show,
introducing and explaining every dance to the public.

Sentido Contrario Band: Rock in Spanish is the specialty of this Rock Band.
Sentido Contrario started on 2009 and is another example of musical growing
in Brandon thanks to immigration. The 6 piece band has performed at the
Summer Fair 2010 and the Liutenant Winter Festival in Brandon, Manitoba.

WBTF 2009

The first event is scheduled for June 16, 2010 and the last event is scheduled for August 18, 2010. The opening night performance will come via the Vincent Massey High School Senior Jazz Band.

The Vincent Massey Senior Jazz Band under the direction of Brent Campbell has performed in the Cellar Jazz Club in Vancouver, Dazzle Jazz Cub in Denver, and in Prague, Halifax and Edmonton. The ensemble is auditioned and comprised of students in grades 9-12. They play repertoire from many of the famous big bands including Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Benny Carter, Stan Kenton, Maynard Ferguson and the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis orchestra. The director, Brent Campbell, has worked with Wynton Marsalis and Jazz @ Lincoln Centre, for IAJE Canada and is currently the long standing Director of the Brandon Jazz Festival.

The June 23rd concert will be Tom Dowden.
Tom got his first guitar at age 15, started playing piano at 24, and has been playing and teaching music ever since. Music has taken him all over the world; playing piano and singing on a cruise ship in Europe, and in groups from coast to coast in Canada and the United States. He has written arrangements for orchestras, bands and vocal groups, and taught in public schools and universities in Canada and the US. He still most enjoys sitting down with a guitar or piano and playing his mixture of folk, blues, jazz, pop and rock.

The June 30th concert is the infamous Groove Kitchen.
Doesn’t it seem like all the best parties always end up in someone’s kitchen? Well that’s the philosophy of Brandon’s own Groove Kitchen. Whenever they play, they make sure to bring on the party and keep the “Kitchen” rocking all night long! Made up of four strong and experienced players, Groove Kitchen serves up some tasty dishes of classic rock favorites, 80’s and 90’s dance classics, and whatever else they can cover that gets hearts thumping, feet stomping and hips gyrating.

On the drums and backup vocals is Brandon’s well known radio personality Frank McGwire. As one of the founders of Ridgefest, Frank’s love for music is absolutely unquestionable when he gets behind the kit. He hits ‘em hard and strong with heart behind every beat.

Rounding out the rhythm section is Adrian Kuryliw. Adrian is the “Kitchen’s” resident chameleon. This guy can play the heck out of any instrument you put in his hands. But his love for rock ’n roll bass lured him into the band and you can feel his passion for music in whatever and whenever he plays.

On lead guitar and backup vocals is Mike Leach. Although he hasn’t been active in the Brandon band scene for very long, he has certainly made an impression on the musical community. Originally from Hamilton Ontario, Mike toured extensively throughout eastern Canada with numerous bands including a stint as Slash in a G’N’R tribute band. It’s hard to find a song that Mike doesn’t already know and his immense talent makes him a valuable player. GK is proud to have him as their lead shredder.

Kitrina Plante is out front on lead vocals. Wife and mother by day, theater actress and rocker chick by night, Kitrina loves the stage. From a very young age her identity has been “the singer”, so it’s no accident that she has continued to do just that any chance she gets. It’s not just about the singing for her though, it’s about the visual entertainment as well. Maybe it’s the actress in her, but Kitrina always strives to make Groove Kitchen not only fun to listen to but fun to watch as well.

These four band mates thoroughly enjoy playing music together and it truly shows when they perform.
